Get your beauty sleep

There’s truth to this whole ‘beauty sleep’ thing. The hours we spend sleeping are actually some of our most constructive, with certain areas of the brain working the hardest while we rest. This also goes for skin, too. During the night, your skin absorbs products better than during the daytime, and is best able to repair and regenerate itself. Plus, there are no environmental stressors such as pollution or sun damage while you sleep, so products are able to penetrate better while you’re not wearing makeup.

The PM routine

Your evening skincare routine is just as important as your daytime routine, and while it’s not a one-size-fits-all, there are some basics that everyone should know. The skincare market is full of loads of brilliant products, so it’s no surprise it can get a little bit confusing when it comes to knowing what serum, moisturiser or toner goes first. Before starting your PM routine, make sure you’ve removed your makeup, so you have clean, prepped skin ready for products.

Time to tone

A step that some people swear by, or tend to skip out, is toner. A good toner helps to calibrate the skin, balancing the PH levels and moisture levels of oilier skins. The Pixi Glow Tonic is enriched with Vitamin E which helps to soothe the skin, plus it’s purse friendly.

Super serums

After toning, apply a serum or treatment of your choice. From adding moisture to targeting blemishes, this step focuses on the needs of your skin. Most people like to add brightening or hydrating serums as these leave the skin looking plump and dewy ready for when you wake.

Tried and tested serums

For us, hyaluronic acid is a go-to fave for our PM routine. Suitable for all ages and most skin types, rub a few drops into your fingertips and massage it upwards into the skin. For a budget friendly option, try The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% for instant hydration, or if you fancy splurging, Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair is a luxurious serum that’ll help your skin feel soft and smooth for up to 72 hours.

Hydrate around the eyes

Never skip your eye cream! When used as preventative care, you can protect the thin skin around your eyes with targeted treatment. The skin around your eyes is a lot more fragile, prone to dryness and shows age more quickly, so applying a pea size amount of eye cream can help address some of these issues. Use your ring fingertip and gently pat around the eye bone, being super careful to not apply the cream too close to the eye as this may make them feel puffy.

Tried and tested eye creams

Look for eye cream formulas with peptides to boost hydration and help firm skin. We particularly love Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment enriched with avocado.

Last but not least, moisturise

The last step in your PM routine should be moisturiser. Helping to hydrate and repair the skin, plus prevent lines and wrinkles, moisturisers work alongside your serum to provide the best results. Make sure your evening moisturiser doesn’t contain any SPF, and apply a 5p size amount to your face and neck, massaging between your fingertips in an upwards motion.

Tried and tested moisturisers

With moisturiser, try to find products that are hydrating but won’t clog pores. Our faves are Weleda Skin Food made with organic plant extracts, and Elemis Pro Collagen Marine Cream if you fancy splurging on a little bit of luxury.
